Statisticians – like many professions – are not immune from the rise of pointless work, says Simon Raper.

Nearly 20 years ago I signed up for a conversion course in applied statistics, thinking a career as a statistician would allow me to sidestep the kind of pointless activity that, according to the anthropologist David Graeber, defines a “bullshit job”. I was wrong. In business at least, meaningless employment is as prevalent among statisticians as it is among any other profession – it is just a little harder to spot.
