Beyond subjective and objective in statistics

(11) RSS Discussion Meeting: Beyond subjective and objective in statistics - YouTube:

Andrew Gelman (Columbia University, New York)
Christian Hennig (University College London)

Decisions in statistical data analysis are often justified, criticized or avoided by using concepts of objectivity and subjectivity. We argue that the words ‘objective’ and ‘subjective’ in statistics discourse are used in a mostly unhelpful way, and we propose to replace each of them with broader collections of attributes, with objectivity replaced by transparency, consensus, impartiality and correspondence to observable reality, and subjectivity replaced by awareness of multiple perspectives and context dependence. Together with stability, these make up a collection of virtues that we think is helpful in discussions of statistical foundations and practice. The advantage of these reformulations is that the replacement terms do not oppose each other and that they give more specific guidance about what statistical science strives to achieve. Instead of debating over whether a given statistical method is subjective or objective (or normatively debating the relative merits of subjectivity and objectivity in statistical practice), we can recognize desirable attributes such as transparency and acknowledgement of multiple perspectives as complementary goals. We demonstrate the implications of our proposal with recent applied examples from pharmacology, election polling and socio-economic stratification. The aim of the paper is to push users and developers of statistical methods towards more effective use of diverse sources of information and more open acknowledgement of assumptions and goals.

The Data That Turned the World Upside Down

The Data That Turned the World Upside Down - Motherboard (Svensk översättning i ETC):
Psychologist Michal Kosinski developed a method to analyze people in minute detail based on their Facebook activity. Did a similar tool help propel Donald Trump to victory? Two reporters from Zurich-based Das Magazin went data-gathering.

An earlier version of this story appeared in Das Magazin in December.

On November 9 at around 8.30 AM., Michal Kosinski woke up in the Hotel Sunnehus in Zurich. The 34-year-old researcher had come to give a lecture at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) about the dangers of Big Data and the digital revolution. Kosinski gives regular lectures on this topic all over the world. He is a leading expert in psychometrics, a data-driven sub-branch of psychology. When he turned on the TV that morning, he saw that the bombshell had exploded: contrary to forecasts by all leading statisticians, Donald J. Trump had been elected president of the United States.

China Indicts Former Statistics Bureau Director Wang for Bribery

Bloomberg:
Wang Baoan, former head of China’s National Bureau of Statistics, was indicted on suspicion of accepting bribes, the official Xinhua News Agency reported Tuesday.

Wang is accused of taking advantage of his posts as NBS chief and assistant and vice finance minister to benefit others, and "illegally accepting a huge amount of money and property" either by himself or through others, Xinhua said, citing the Supreme People’s Procuratorate. The report Tuesday didn’t include any reference to the accuracy of Chinese economic data.

Beware TOTAL emission! Use per capita!

From Gapminder

As Hans showed in the film Don’t Panic, the richest billion people emits the double amount of CO2, compared to the second richest.

The richest countries don’t like this fact, because it shows who must start cutting CO2 most urgently!

It’s us. It’s not them!

U.S. and other high income countries, instead like to compare total emission, which makes the Chinese and the other large middle income countries, seem more guilty.

Vem vinner det franska presidentvalet enligt prediktionsmarknaderna?

Ekonomistas:

Students take to Facebook, offer money to complete statistics projects

Photo Credit: Emmanuel Briseño | Daily Texan Staff
The Daily Texan:
As the semester draws to a close, students in statistics classes have taken to Facebook as an easy way of accumulating responses for project surveys — and some are offering money in return.

Student Facebook groups have seen an influx of students posting surveys and offering monetary compensation for student responses, a trend that irks some statistics professors.

Graphs – beauty and truth

Learn and Teach Statistics and Operations Research | Demystifying statistics and O.R for learners and teachers.:
I really like graphs. I like the way graphs turn numbers into pictures. A good graph is elegant. It uses a few well-placed lines to communicate what would take a paragraph of text. And like a good piece of literature or art, a good graph continues to give, beyond the first reading. I love looking at my YouTube and WordPress graphs. These graphs tell me stories. The WordPress analytics tell me that when I put up a new post, I get more hits, but that everyday more than 1000 people read one of my posts. The YouTube analytics tell me stories about when people want to know about different aspects of statistics. It is currently the end of the North American school year, and the demand is for my video on Choosing which statistical test to use. Earlier in the year, the video about levels of measurement is the most popular. And not many people view videos about statistics on the 25th of December. I’m happy to report that the YouTube and WordPress graphs are good graphs.

Machine Learning Vs. Statistics - Edvancer Eduventures

Machine Learning Vs. Statistics - Edvancer Eduventures:
Many people have this doubt, what’s the difference between statistics and machine learning? Is there something like machine learning vs. statistics?

From a traditional data analytics standpoint, the answer to the above question is simple.

  • Machine Learning is an algorithm that can learn from data without relying on rules-based programming.
  • Statistical modeling is a formalization of relationships between variables in the data in the form of mathematical equations.

Machine learning is all about predictions, supervised learning, unsupervised learning, etc.

Statistics is about sample, population, hypothesis, etc.

Two different critters, right? Well, let’s see if they are actually that different!

A History of Statistics

A History of Statistics | Quality Digest:
This month’s column comes from a convergence of finishing my article, “Statistical Thinking for OD Professionals,” for the OD Practitioner, and reading “How Statistics Lost their Power—and Why We Should Fear What Comes Next” in the Guardian, and Weapons of Math Destruction by Cathy O’Neil (Crown Publishing Group, 2016). I modestly titled this column “A History of Statistics,” even though I have only six credit hours of statistics education. A better title might be “Dave’s Pretty True Story of the Evolution of Statistics.” Here goes.

8 Movies that Will Make You Love Mathematics, Statistics and Numbers

From United Statisticians:
To a lot of people, mathematics and statistics – even at a basic level – are still some of the hardest disciplines to be learned. Numbers and formulas can be very confusing, especially when you don’t understand the purpose of the equations and the WHY behind whatever you study in these subjects. Nevertheless, mathematics and numbers are fundamental to many areas of our life, and an effort to better understand them is always a great initiative.

A great way of starting to understand them is to see how they can be important in our daily life.
That said, we created a list of 8 movies in which are all about math and stats. You are going to love them.
