Last year, NHS Digital published official statistics on the prevalence of mental health of children and young people. This was the first major survey of the mental health of children and young people since 2004, and applied rigorous, detailed and consistent methods to assess for a range of disorders defined according to International Classification of Disease (ICD-10) diagnostic criteria.

This session, presented by the authors of the report, describes the innovative survey design adopted to measure the rates of mental disorders in children aged 2-19 in England. It discusses the sample design, questionnaire, fieldwork, clinical rating, weighting and analysis of the survey, and present the key findings from the survey.
